You may have decided to start taking the maintenance of your roof seriously. But soon enough, you run into the same problem that almost every homeowner does not like: damage to your roof. When this happens you are caught in two minds, you feel it is best to just patch the roof, but you still have this feeling that the best thing to do is to replace it completely.

Many homeowners find themselves in this dilemma and do not know how to navigate it. This article is going to show you how best to deal with the situation so that you come out on top and ensure you make the best decision for your roof.

Should you Patch your Roof?

A construction worker is standing in front of a blackboard with question marks written on it.

The decision to patch your roof instead of replacing it totally can save you a whole lot of money. This is the case especially when the damage is not too severe. If the damage to your roof is not a serious one, replacing it totally can be a waste of money. If the area that has been damaged is not very significant, you do not need to overhaul and change the roof.

However, if the damage is serious or something very significant, you will need to do more than just patch your room. Do not try to solve a big problem with a small solution. If your roof has experienced storm damage, patching it will not solve the problem. And if you do not solve the problems, then you will spend more money and the whole process becomes expensive.

Another important factor you should consider is the age of the roof. Most roofs can last up to 20 years. So if it is an old roof and it has started having numerous leaks, patching it may not be the right call, because it would just get bad again. However, if it is a new roof that has small to medium damage or leak, then you can consider patching it as the roof is still new.

Pros of patching your roof.

  • It saves you a lot of money. Patching your roof is cheaper than replacing it completely. And if the damage is not serious as stated earlier then it is the right decision to take.
  • It is part of the routine maintenance of your roof.
  • It helps to prevent moisture damage that could occur from having one part of your roof leaking.
  • It helps to eliminate immediate threats and other inconveniences.
  • It reduces the amount of time your home is under construction.

Cons of patching your roof.

Patching your roof can mask/hide the underlying problems that the roof may have. This makes it look as though the roof is fixed but in truth, it is not.

Patching the roof poorly can lead to more damage and eventually more overhead costs.

In severe damage, patching your roof is a waste of time and resources.

When is roof replacement right for you?

There are certain events where replacement is the only option available for you. These events do not give you room for an option or an alternative.

Catastrophic events

As stated earlier, if it was minor damage, then you can patch the roof and all will be well, but when a roof encounters huge environmental damage, then the repair will not be enough for it. More will be needed.

Many catastrophic events can damage your roof badly, they include tornadoes, hail storms, and others. These events can completely ruin your roof and leave it in shambles and at this point, patching it is a complete waste of time. In those types of situations, the only solution is roof replacement. However, you need to ensure that you contact a reputable roofing company so that they will advise you on how best to go about it.

Replacing your roof is a big project and it requires a big investment and this is an issue for most people. So when you find yourself in such a situation, you need to seek help. A professional will help you to access the damage and determine whether you need to replace the whole roof or repair the damaged parts.

Partial replacement

A roof with a chimney on top of it is being repaired.

This is an option open for those whose roofs have not been completely damaged. If the event just affected one side of your roof, then you will not need to change the whole roof. You may only need to replace that one area which was damaged. The option of partial replacement is cheaper than a full replacement. However, it is more expensive than patching.

Roof replacement can be a big project and it costs lots of money, however it gives your roof a longer lifespan.

Pros of replacing your roof.

  • It starts the life of your roof all over again. You can now start counting 20 years ahead and believing that the roof will last that long.
  • Installing a new roof helps to solve multiple issues at once. Instead of trying to patch various places in very bad damage, replacing the roof solves all the problems at once.

Cons of replacing your roof.

  • The cost of replacing the roof is quite high. It is not a small-time project, it is a big-time thing. You have to set money aside to get it down.
  • It does not guarantee that other catastrophic events will not happen. The fact that you installed a new roof, does not mean those bad events will stop happening.
  • Finding a reputable roofing company to help install a new roof is also a big problem for homeowners when it comes to replacing their roof.

These are some of the things you will need to consider when deciding if you would patch your roof or replace it completely. Now the choice is yours. It has been laid out to you how to handle the situation, it is no longer a dilemma, you just have to apply what you were thought.

Conclusion

Dealing with roofing problems can be a hassle, but if you are equipped with the right information, you will be able to always make the right decision.

Lastly, the best way to determine the better option, whether to replace your roof or patch it, is by talking with a professional roofer with vast experience in providing roofing solutions to homeowners in your area.
